5 Reasons To Paint Furniture This Year

Happy New Year!!! It’s January 3rd, 2020 and in the spirit of new beginnings, I woke up thinking about setting a new year resolution and actually sticking to it this year. With my cup of coffee in hand, I took to Instagram to browse through what all my fellow DIY’ers, entrepreneurs and moms have set as their new year resolutions for some inspiration.

What I wasn’t prepared for this morning is the abundance of discouraging memes, quotes, and posts about failing at your resolution!!!

I have to admit, some are funny, but c’mon! Where’s the encouragement?!?!?

I’ve decided to compile a list of popular New Year resolutions, and rather than tell you how you’ll fail in the next two weeks, I’m going to tell you how awesome you are and how House&Canvas can give you a hand succeeding and fulfilling those resolutions!!!

Resolution #1: I want to shrink my carbon footprint

When people think of being green, they often think it takes installing solar panels on their roof or switching to a hybrid car… but you don’t have to go to such extremes to make a difference. Making small everyday changes, makes a huge overall impact.

Painting furniture is more eco-friendly than you think… Let me break it down for you!

  • Think about the furniture you’re painting. Whether it’s your own dated piece, a hand-me-down, from a thrift store, or a curbside find, you’re keeping it from the landfill
  • By not buying new, you’re not supporting stores selling mass-produced furniture
  • Not only is our paint odorless and water based, but our signature, eco-friendly hybrid paint cans are also made with recycled polypropylene are 100% recyclable.
  • Our furniture wax topcoat is packaged in tin cans which are 100% recyclable
  • Reduce, reuse, recycle!!!

Resolution #2: I want to make my house a home

Life is busy and we all have to prioritize our time. Sometimes, decorating our home gets thrown to the bottom of the priority list. Yet, we all desire that cozy home to come home to after a long day at work, or that sanctuary-like bedroom to retreat to at night.

I get it, time is precious and money is tight. Don’t overwhelm yourself by tackling your whole house right away. Start with just one room. Take peek at the furniture pieces you already have and picture them in a new, fresh color. Not the new, trendy color flooding your Pinterest feed… a color that YOU love. Now go paint it!! H&C furniture paint and wax dries in just one hour. You can finish your piece in half a day no problem!! And since there is ZERO odors, you can throw down a drop cloth and paint your piece exactly where it is. Don’t hurt your self dragging your furniture into another room!!

You’d be amazed at the feeling of accomplishment you get from painting just one piece. It’s pure motivation to keep going and update all those other pieces!!

Resolution #3: I want to be more creative

Not everyone is blessed with the crazy creative gene and can just snap their fingers and create something impressive. I have a lot of friends that browse DIY projects and artwork online and say “I wish I could do that!”.

I tell them all the time… trust me, you don’t have to be a professional artist or interior designer to tap into your creative side. All you need to do is push yourself to pick up a brush and dip it into a paint can. Grab a small piece of furniture – a chair, side table, tray, wall mirror. Something that you don’t have an emotional attachment to. Now go paint it!

Their first response is always “Nooooo, I’ll mess it up!”. This is my favorite line because I get to say, “How? Brushstrokes? Drip marks? Uneven finish?”

First of all, our paint is self-leveling. But, if by chance you do get brush strokes or a drip, give your surface a quicksand before your topcoat and smooth it all out. It’s SO EASY!!! You cannot mess it up!!!

I’ve taught so many beginners and I just love how they leave with such a sense of pride in their project. You would be amazed at how good it feels to complete a piece of furniture. I promise the hardest part of painting furniture is picking out the color!!!

Resolution#4: I want to generate a side income

Making an additional income can be an awesome financial resolution. Especially in a tough economy, having a side gig can give you some much needed peace of mind. Even an extra hundred bucks a month can be a great way to reach other financial goals like paying down debt, making an extra mortgage payment or starting a vaca fund!

Ever thought about flipping furniture?!?! Before House&Canvas started, I was a stay at home mom for 10 years, and during that time, flipping furniture wasn’t just a hobby, it was a great second income for my family that allowed us to enjoy things that otherwise we would have sacrificed to have me stay home.

Once word got out to my friends, family and neighbors, I found my garage stuffed to the rim with free furniture. People were more than happy to drop off their old furniture to me, rather than drag it to the second-hand shop. The support was (and still is) overwhelming. I also made relationships with some of my favourite local second hand shop and scored some great deals on furniture, keeping my initial cost down.

I sold majority of my refinished pieces on Facebook Markletplace and Kijiji. If you use a people pleasing colour, price your pieces right and take some good pics, you’ll sell your stuff super quick! When I sat on pieces too long, I would drop them off at my local consignment shop. I didn’t get to keep the full sale price, but I was willing to sacrifice a percentage for the storage space at home.

Moral of the story – flipping furniture is fun, creative and full of income potential!

Resolution #5: I want to give back

The New Year is always such an inspiring time because it gives the opportunity for a new beginning and a fresh start, so no wonder so many people have “giving back” at the top of their resolution list.

I know what you’re thinking – how on earth can furniture paint help me give back to my community?!?! In soooo many more ways than you think.

Did you know that majority of your local thrift stores are actually run by non-profit organizations and are charity driven? By purchasing your furniture and decor items from these shops, you are supporting their mission and helping make a difference. Just think of the thrift stores that are in your neighbourhood: Salvation Army, Good Will, Value Village, Misson Thrift Store etc…

Take the time to read up on each store and their charitable missions and feel good about your purchases and support.
